In an earlier post, over a month ago, analysis of Saint Lucia’s COVID 19 cases were discussed up until January 20th. Saint Lucia has continued to struggle with the COVID-19 crisis, and unfortunately registered rising number of cases including deaths due to Authorities’ incompetence. In this blog post we will review some of the recent numbers and trends which could result in the dire projections from the SLMDA.

Facebook post by Mr. Urban Dolor on Saturday February 27th.

My friend T.P. asked me to explain why 5 months after a so-called super spreader event the government has been unable to get the daily average of new Covid-19 cases under control. There can be only one response — brazen, undiluted incompetence! It is little wonder that Saint Lucia is now 5th on the New York Times “Doing worst in the World” list. Citizens of Saint Lucia should be concerned that on the 25th of February we were ranked 7th.

On Friday 26th February, the Ministry Of Health informed us that there were 207 new Covid-19 cases. Yes, 207 new cases! That was after we were told, on both 23rd and 24th, there were only 7 cases. During the previous week, the pattern was similar — during the week, few cases were revealed (27) but on the weekend we learned that there were 458 new Covid-19 cases! When we consider that the news cycle and talk shows are dormant on week-ends, it is tempting to conclude that the release of the data is being manipulated to mask the egregious incompetence of this government.

We must be mindful that in a letter to the Prime Minister, the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association expressed grave concern about the COVID-19 situation in Saint Lucia. The Association is now fearful that within the next 4 weeks we will have a total of 6,000 cases and a total of 90 persons will die as a result of this pandemic. Members of the Association are concerned that the “health sector capacity in particular general and critical care hospital beds” will be overwhelmed. Rather than accept the gravity of the situation, wait for the Backers to claim that the SLMDA is partisan.

We can only hope that the UWP government and its Backers will stop blaming some phantom super spreader event for our predicament. They cannot ascribe the wrong cause to the problem and hope to find a feasible solution. Incidentally, by continuing to tout this super spreader event nonsense, the Backers continue to highlight the government’s palpable incompetence!”

Weekly Cases Per Capita From NYTimes on Saturday Feb 27th

Cases Per Capita in the Caribbean as of February 27th

Some observations include the following:

  • Saint Lucia has one of the highest cases and deaths per capita across the English speaking Caribbean.
  • Saint Lucia’s cases and deaths per capita is now higher than Martinique which was a “backdoor” source as claimed by the Prime Minister.
  • Dominica which is also adjacent to Saint Lucia has almost one tenth the number of cases per capita compared to Saint Lucia.
  • Among the top 5 countries with the highest number of cases Saint Lucia has the lowest number of tests per million.
